Technology tends to become mythic. I use this word in the sense in which it was used by the French literary critic, Roland Barthes. He used the word "myth" to refer to a common tendency to think of our technological creations as if they were God-given, as if they were a part of the natural order of things. I have on oc

Postman's move is sharp: naming the mechanism (Barthes' myth, technology mistaken for natural order) with a single concrete test — ask when the alphabet was invented, watch the confusion. That's argument doing real work, not vibes about tech skepticism.

Tina Campt

Campt replaces the terminal paper with a glossary assignment — a pedagogical move that doubles as a theory of method: black visuality doesn't reduce to objects, it has to be defined into a vocabulary that holds sound, touch, and affect alongside sight. Sharp because it's a teaching practice, not a manifesto.

Revolution begins with the self, in the self. The individual, the basic revolutionary unit, must be purged of poison and lies that assault the ego and threaten the heart, that hazard the next larger unit—the couple or pair, that jeopardize the still larger unit—the family or cell, that put the entire movement in peril.

Bambara names the trap before naming the fix: the demand for 'no models' is harder and more useful than any borrowed framework. Six sentences that outwork most manifestos twice their length — argument alone earns this its place.

A 1971 Porsche Monza poster that is a masterclass in the technical-overlay aesthetic the feed is currently rediscovering — decades before the trend. A type specimen that argues for itself: bilingual manifesto set in a mono grid, then two experimental Cyrillic display cuts that fracture the letterform into faceted, near-runic geometry. The torn-paper horizon slicing the poster into black and white bands does real work: 'IN ABSENCE OF' fractures across the rupture, the grid reasserts itself in the lower half, and the whole thing enacts presence-and-void rather than just decorating it. Notice how the type holds its Helvetica composure while the ground tears out from under it — a precursor to the anti-flatness impulse, done with restraint instead of clutter.

The black-and-white feathered knit and the camellia-medallion bag echo each other in graphic rounds, and the whole thing reads as structured confidence, not logo worship, even with the Chanel marks. Considered, witty staging over decoration.

Armani, Peter Lindbergh

Lindbergh at his least glossy: an Armani linen suit rumpled and lived-in against dry stone and dust, shot like reportage rather than campaign. A Prada campaign frame that earns its keep on pure structural precision — the grey seamless box, the kneeling diagonal of the body, and a single yellow-stemmed poppy cutting the monochrome like a live wire. A single model multiplied into a receding chorus line — identical black Celine suit, cropped hair, glasses — collapsing fashion editorial into a study of uniformity and institutional dread. The LC4 is canon, but this isn't a catalog shot — it's a staging. Notice how the chrome cantilever of the chaise rhymes with the faceted white plaster soffit floating above it, curve answering fold, machine-age steel against sculptural mass. The cowhide's organic mottling is the only warmth in an otherwise glacial white void, and it's what earns the frame.

Maintenance and repair as political acts, not afterthoughts — this reframes infrastructure as something continuously held together by labor and power, exactly the cross-disciplinary theory the shelf is for. The Internet Isn't Available in Most Languages

A sharp reframe of the web's supposed universality: the Gaelic 'tweet, tuit, or giolc?' debate makes the abstraction of linguistic exclusion concrete and strange. The argument carries this — a genuinely overlooked structural bias in the medium we treat as borderless — and the Reuters image of an Aymara woman at a Facebook terminal earns its place by staging exactly that tension.

A book blurb, yes — but the argument earns it: state weather control as a Cold War fever dream with live implications for how we now imagine engineering the climate. The cover does its job too — bold condensed type carving through a plume of cloud-vapor that reads as both rain and mushroom cloud.

A conversation between a science-fiction writer imagining the internet's death and an artist who maps its buried physical infrastructure — the pairing does real cross-disciplinary work, dragging network power structures out of the abstract and into geography. Sobol's high-grain black-and-white collapses the distance between hunter and dogs into a single blizzard-blown field — notice how the taut traces are the only hard lines, everything else dissolving into snow and grain. The paired diary text isn't decoration; it turns a photograph into an account of thin ice and near-death, and the hybrid is stronger for it. Robin Sloan thinking through why individual internet hosting has become structurally, not just practically, impossible — and using that diagnosis to argue for overlay networks as counterculture infrastructure. Eco names the exact anxiety of the accumulation era decades early: the photocopy — now the saved tab, the downloaded PDF — as a substitute for the reading itself. A tight, self-implicating aphorism on information hoarding that lands harder now than when it was written. Text carries this alone.

Repair Work Ethnographies: Revisiting Breakdown, Relocating MAteriality – Ignaz Strebel, Alain Bovet, Philippe Sormani

Repair, maintenance, breakdown — the unglamorous underside of every designed object, treated as serious ethnographic terrain. The two worn pipe wrenches against black are the whole thesis: tools that fix things, themselves objects that wear. A sharp reframing of materiality through obsolescence and the politics of who fixes what.

La Nord in use by @stuartgeddes 🤤

A monograph cover in a custom typeface set gold on near-black, spaced with the confidence of someone who trusts the reader to slow down. Stuart Geddes's typography does the rhetorical work — "Mutual Assured Destruction" rendered as quiet menace rather than shout. The kind of legible craft that survives the anti-polish moment by being genuinely considered.

Phil’s Finest Packaging Playfully Pushes The Limits

Gander's work for Phil's Finest is a masterclass in monochromatic discipline: each package locks its label color to the meat inside, so the whole line reads as a chromatic scale rather than a set of variants. Notice the hand-drawn deli lettering doing real work — playful, dense, unafraid of the transparent tray most brands would hide. This is confident craft, not trend-chasing.

Naomi Klein: 'Let Them Drown: the violence of othering in a warming world'

Klein reads Edward Said against the steam engine, arguing that Orientalism's logic of disposable people is the same logic now deciding which nations drown. This is exactly the cross-disciplinary rigor the shelf wants — critical theory recruited to reframe climate as a machinery of othering. Judge it on the argument, not the podium shot.

Julia Watson's Lo-TEK reframes indigenous engineering as a serious design methodology, not folklore — exactly the cross-disciplinary rigor the shelf rewards. The image earns it too: the reed dwellings of the Mesopotamian marshes read as living architecture built from the wetland itself, no imported material in sight. A theory piece that redraws the boundary of what counts as technology.

A peer-reviewed dissection of the "eco-drone" as humanitarian myth — how aerial rescue imagery masks infrastructural inequality and the quiet privatization of disaster response. A gold anchor-chain and toggle bar laid across raw plaster, with a scatter of pale pebbles orbiting the metal like a still-life constellation. “This summer, Climate Care will explore correlations between environment, urban practice and education by devising a programme for climate challenges.” – Floating University

Floating University's Berlin water-basin project turns care theory into a curriculum for urban practice — the rare climate-programme framing that names the social and political ecologies alongside the environmental one. Notice how the poster earns its keep too: heavy black display type with a reversed 'E' pressing down on marigolds erupting from an oily dark ground, tension between blight and bloom made legible in one frame.

A human-rights and tech specialist reframing the net as a shift from creation to control — 'digital colonialism' as a working concept, not a slogan. This is exactly the counterculture-meets-critical-theory range the site wants: an argument with teeth, from CCCB's reliably sharp editorial program.

A rigorous interview with the Out of the Woods collective linking climate migration to the border regime — the kind of cross-disciplinary counterculture argument this reader exists to shelve alongside the images. Strelka's speculative-urbanism think-tank is exactly the cross-disciplinary rigor this reader exists for — research on emerging tech and the future city, staged with editorial nerve. A designer's reading list rendered as pure typographic system — each title a full-bleed color band with ISBN and category tag flush right, the whole thing reading like a spectrum of design history. Notice how the type shifts register per entry (Karel Martens in scarlet display, Euclid in restrained serif) so the layout itself performs the taste it's cataloging. A darkroom studio's identity built from film-strip logic: six color-coded services stacked like exposure test strips, checkerboard patterns nodding to registration marks and contact sheets. A clean grotesque header collides with a liquefied, melting arc of type — 'CIRCUITO EMERGENTE' warped into a molten wave that reads as heat and dissolution at once. TILT: Neon, Prism, Warp

A type specimen that earns its keep by demonstrating rather than describing: the interactive rotation controls (horizontal/vertical at 0.00°) turn Clymer's dimensional lettering into a live object you tilt in space. Notice how the same forms read as flat neon, outlined prism, and warped extrusion — and how the storefront-signage samples (Nhà Hàng, Hok Shan Building, 220) ground the whole family in the vernacular it's drawn from.
